Understanding the Layers of the Skin

Understanding the Layers of the Skin

Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in the body? That’s right: The waterproof outer shield that keeps your insides covered is actually a giant organ composed of three main layers.

If you’re considering a career in skin care and beauty, you need to know what these layers are and how to care for them because that’s what clients will pay you to do. At the Hollywood Institute of Beauty Careers, we work hard to ensure all our students gain the knowledge and are equipped to begin their exciting new lives in the esthetic industry.

In the meantime, here’s a quick overview of the skin’s three main layers.

The epidermis, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, has many roles. It is the top layer of skin, responsible for producing both new skin cells as well as melanin, varying amounts of which give skin the wide range of colors we can see in the world today. The epidermis protects your body with different thicknesses in different places. For instance, while the epidermis on the bottoms of your feet is very thick, it is extremely thin on your eyelids.

The dermis is just beneath the epidermis, and does the heavy lifting of growing hair, helping you feel things, producing sweat and oil and “feeding” your skin by bringing blood to the area. If you nick your skin and it begins to bleed, that means you have cut into the dermis.

Subcutaneous Fat

Beneath the dermis is a layer of fat, which is responsible for keeping your warm and storing extra calories. Some of its other tasks include anchoring the upper levels of skin to your muscles and bones and letting through the blood vessels and nerve cells that end in your dermis.

Caring for Skin

The skin is a delicate structure that requires care and nutrition in order to maintain its proper balance. You can help clients learn about such care and provide services that substantially improve skin health by enrolling in the Skin Care Program at Hollywood Institute of Beauty Careers.

If you’re ready to enroll, or would like to learn more about the program, head to our web page today and fill out the information form on the right side of the page. Don’t wait to begin the career you’ve always dreamed of.
