This type of job falls under the umbrella of “traditional esthetics,” which means it focuses on improving the appearance of the skin and face using external methods. Salons

Salons are another common career path for estheticians. However, you may find that you’re a bit more limited on what services you can provide to clients in a traditional salon. Typically, since salons are focused on basic beauty services, you’ll be focused on facial waxing for your clients, rather than providing facials and other skin treatments.

If you want to work in a salon, it’s a good idea to get both your esthetician certification and a cosmetology license. This will enable you to provide waxing services as well as hair styling services for your clients.

Medical Esthetics

This career path differs quite a bit from careers in a day spa or salon, and you may require additional certification, such as esthetician laser training. In these jobs, you’ll be providing very result-oriented treatments, such as advanced facials, chemical peels, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, or laser skin rejuvenation. You may also be responsible for helping the dermatologist or plastic surgeon prepare the client’s skin for an injection or other procedure.

Because these services are more medical in nature, you’ll also need to participate in client education and provide recovery and homecare recommendations for them to follow after the procedure is complete.

Business Ownership

Finally, as an esthetician, you also have the option of starting your own business. This typically works best in the traditional esthetics field, as medical esthetics requires the presence of a physician. However, if you’re interested in owning your own day spa or salon, esthetician training is a great place to start. Of course, opening up a physical location has a lot of upfront costs—but don’t let that stop you!
