Nail Trends for Winter 2020/2021

Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, winter 2020-2021 is likely to be the season of the at-home manicure. Luckily, it's also a season full of cool nail trends, from funky shapes to creative designs. Whether you are taking nail tech classes this season or are just looking for a way to add some excitement to your DIY manicure, here are some of the top nail trends to try.

Deep Hues

With its short days and long nights, winter is a time for rich, dark colors. That holds true for your nails, too. One of the most trending nail colors this season are deep, dark blue and bold and beautiful burgundy.

A brilliant cobalt blue on each nail is eye-catching enough without being too demanding of attention. It's cool and sophisticated, much like winter itself.

Meanwhile, a romantic burgundy brings to mind the holiday season. For a particularly dramatic look, consider pairing dark burgundy nails with a matching burgundy lipstick.

Geometric Shapes

Think of geometric shapes as a beginner's way to give nail art a try. Compared to some of the more intricate designs you have might have seen on nails lately, geometric patterns are pretty easy to do.

One way to give the trend a try is to paint the nails a dark base color, such as black or dark blue. Then, paint a bold, bright stripe up and down the length of the nail. Instead of polish, you can cut nail stickers in a variety of shapes and affix them to the nails.

Nails of Many Colors

Ever feel indecisive about which color to pick during your manicure? This next trend is for you. Instead of painting each nail the same hue, choose a different color for each nail.

There are many ways to play with the trend. You can choose several colors that complement each other, such as three monochromatic shades or two neutrals and one pop of color. You can paint your nails the color of the rainbow. Or, you can mix it up and give yourself a version of a French manicure, swapping the traditional white tips for an array of hues.

Animal Prints

Animal prints, whether they are cheetah, zebra or tiger, count as a neutral in plenty of people's books. Although attention-grabbing, they also count as a neutral on your nails. You can wear nails with animal patterns with pretty much anything.

How much of the nail you want to be covered in the pattern is up to you. Some go for an all-over print while others tone it down with a floating design.

All That Glitters

The holiday season is all about sparkles and metallics and winter 2020-2021 will be no exception. Go full-on metallic with your nails by painting them a shiny silver or glittery gold. You can combine two trends into one by picking a deep shade, such as cobalt or midnight blue that has some glitter mixed in.

Another way to take on the trend is to go for a metallic French manicure. Use silver or glitter polish on the tips of your nails in place of basic white.

Barely There

For many people, 2020 has been all about scaling back and simplifying. While several nail trends this season are all about flash and style, one trend is decidedly more understated. A barely-there manicure, with a sheer, neutral shade, will call attention to the health of your nails. It's a great option for when you want to show off another part of your look, whether it's a bold lip, funky eyeshadow or vibrant sweater.
